Chains of Habit

by | 86 comments

It happens gradually. He never even notices it. Until it’s too late. Until he’s dead.

Chains of Habit

Yep, it’s easy to boil a frog in a kettle, just turn up the heat gradually and he’ll never know he’s being cooked alive.

Life is like water in that kettle. Small things – tasks, chores, commitments, meetings and more are always getting added to our already over-committed lives. It doesn’t feel that bad at first. Just a little added stress, a tad more pressure, one more thing.

But before long the list of daily commitments and energy drainers turn up the heat and our dreams start to shrivel and die.

What energy drainers are in your life?

Take a few minutes. List them on a piece of paper. Look at them long and hard.

Do you really need to do all those things? Be all those things? To all those people?

What would happen to your dream of owning a thriving life coaching business if all (or most) of those energy drainers went away? If you could finally devote your time to the things that matter most?

It’s never too late to jump out of that boiling cauldron of false expectations to begin again. Do it today!

Start with a clean slate, and add in 5-minutes of marketing. You’ll be glad you did.

A clean slate sounds great! Thank you. Today, I was able to post a video right into FB thread and schedule another one for later in the week…that was after trying many times unsuccessfully yesterday. I have a variety of other marketing projects today.

    • Kim Avery

You are really mastering your video production. Good job.

I am slow to the party (my first day participating) .. But today I wished five friends Happy Birthday on Facebook and offered them my book “Ten Steps to Walking Boldly” (full of a lot of great information but concludes with a call of action to coaching).

Writing is one of my energy-givers, so I concluded at the end of last year some other involvements (energy drainers) in order to leave space for writing. My marketing activity today was the posting/email of my weekly coaching post in one of my specific niches.

    • Kim Avery

That’s so wise, Nancy. I’m glad you’re going to be able to write more.

This week I will be informing the NY Women of Purpose Director for our denomination that, after our spring luncheon in April, I will be stepping down from the position I hold. While I enjoy the personal connections with women this position affords me, I do not like the logistics and administration of coordinating large events each year. I’ve been praying about continuing in a role that allows me to partner with these women in ministry but leaving the day-to-day tasks to another. Yet another example of saying “no” to the good, so I can say “yes” to better.

Almost done with my annual marketing plan and had a real breakthrough about the blogging portion of it in my coaching session today–thanks Christy! Also did some more work on a presentation I will be doing in the near future. Feeling good about what God has me doing!

    • Kim Avery

Sounds like you are really prioritizing those things that are most important to you and most impactful with others. This should make a huge difference in your year.

Today I sent supportive emails to three clients. The surprise was getting glowing comments back from them on how well their businesses are doing as a result of our coaching. Now in my ‘Atta Girl’ file! They are already commenters in my LI recommendations.

That’s so cool, Pat. What a great affirmation that you’re really making an impact.

Thanks for the encouragement to drop the energy drainers! It’s very important. Today I signed up for Grammar Girl podcast.

Hi Laurie, Good for you. When we have our own businesses what we say ‘no’ to is as important as what we say ‘yes’ to, isn’t it?

Since my target group is women with auto-immune disorders, I spent time today researching online groups and finally decided on a good group to not only share my own journey with auto-immune disorders, but also to learn from others who suffer from it.

That’s awesome, Kristie. I’m so glad you’re going to be able to connect with others in your target group on a regular basis.

Krisite, I have several alumni clients with autoimmune diseases. Please put me in your database so that when your offerings are solid I can let them know about you. pat@kickbuttsalestraining.com.

I looked over my website and want to make some changes. I just have to do some further research in order to make it the way I need it to be. I also had some further training as a mentor coach. I always enjoy that time and learn so many new things!

Good job, Jill. It sounds like you are moving ahead on several fronts.

Took my new webpage and worked with my web person to change it just enough so that it looks like it goes with my other website (of which it is a part) and yet its own thing due to the color change. Hard to explain. The two websites are clergylifecoaching.com and congregationalgps.com but congregationalgps.com (my new one) takes you to a page on the clergylifecoaching.com website. Clear as mud?! This has been a huge marketing piece for me as I have been doing the work of the gps site without there ever being anything “out there” saying that I do it. Now I have cards and a website which gives me credibility!

Hmm…I have been thinking about my “ideal schedule” the last few days and trying to make some changes. This just hammers the subject home…I need to be wiser about how I spend my time!!
As for marketing…today was a good one! I sent out a pre-prelaunch email as I prepare for my book to be launched! And kept up the usual fb engagement. This is becoming a habit! Now I am trying to not fritter away all my time on facebook…that is my next step…scheduling!

    • Kim Avery

“This is becoming a habit!” I LOVE that sentence. Keep up the great work!
