Behind-the-scenes 😬 Retiring from marketing

by | 0 comments

Thank you, thank you to all of you who asked “why in the world are you retiring Marketing Momentum, and what’s next?”

It’s a good question because if you know me, you know that I don’t like change. At all. It’s unsettling, uncomfortable, and usually very messy.

So, here’s the backstory on how I got to the place where I’m changing almost everything. 🤷‍♀️

Behind-the-Scenes

For the past 12 years, I’ve been pressing forward towards a singular goal of helping Christ-centered entrepreneurs build successful businesses as they partner with God to change the world.

I have loved every minute of the journey and thought I would do it forever.

But Then…

March 2020 arrived, and you know what happened.

Life as we knew it came to a screeching halt.

Borders closed. Front doors slammed shut, dreams died, and the world waited with bated breath for it all to end.

But it didn’t end.

And it won’t.

The long shadow of the pandemic and its ramifications continues to grow.

Sure, many borders have reopened and people are back out in the streets, but nothing is the same.

I have felt it, and studies confirm it.

Our overloaded, exhausted, I-could-barely-keep-up-in-2019 lives got harder. A lot harder.

Stress levels skyrocketed, and our “always-on” technology has meant that our insane number of work hours has actually increased.

According to one national survey, 77% of American employees reported at least one instance of burnout in 2021. More than half could cite multiple times when they’d simply reached the end.

Welcome to the New Abnormal
These changes aren’t just taking place on some abstract worldwide level. It’s impacting you and me, the people we love, and those we serve.

I began noticing the shift early into the pandemic when coaching conversations took on a different flavor.

Sure, my clients still needed help with their marketing. Everyone does, and always will.

But most of the time, marketing began to feel less like strategic planning and more like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic as it was sinking into the frigid abyss.

Why? Because behind all the work, planning, strategies, and tactics they needed to build a business was a precious child of God feeling a weight that none of us are equipped to bear.

We are weary. Lonely. Overwhelmed, and confused. (Not the best state for business building and changing the world.)

It’s Time for a Different Approach
We live in a changed and ever-changing world. And it’s a world where coaches, entrepreneurs, and ministry leaders need more than a few quick strategies, 5 easy steps, and a weekend retreat.

We need supernatural help.

And the only way to prepare for and survive the future is with a deeper connection with the God who holds the future.

An all-knowing, compassionate, ever-loving, faithful God.

“God, You Want Me to Do Whaaaaat?”
The more the world changed, the more I felt God asking me to change, too. Change almost e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g.

To stop working on marketing and instead, help people partner more fully with Him in the messiness of everyday work and life.

I wish I could tell you that I jumped in quickly with a faith-filled smile, eager to change my whole business overnight.

But, I did not.

As God laid this on my heart, I’m embarrassed to say that I pulled my best Moses imitation, and it sounded a bit like this:

My Argument with God
Kim: “Here I am, Lord, send… Aaron. Or Bill. Nancy would be great at this. Or have you thought about asking Janette? Lord, anyone but me.”

God: [Silence.]

Kim: “Lord, I get it, I really do. And I would LOVE to create a space and a place for these hard-working entrepreneurs and burned-out ministry leaders to tend to their souls. To connect more deeply with you. To listen for your whisper and lean into your love.”

Kim continues: (I always seem to have lots of objections for God 🤷‍♀️): “Here’s the thing, God. In over a decade of marketing experience, my studied analysis is that this is the kind of coaching that everyone needs, but no one really understands. Or will commit time or resources to get.”

“Face it, Lord, we humans love a quick fix, clear answers, and working hard on the tactical, surface things we’re convinced will help.”

Kim, still blathering on: “And to make it worse, Lord, not only are people not looking for this type of coaching, I don’t even know what this kind of coaching is called…”

“Is it soul care + Spiritual direction + coaching + prayer partner + mentor + business coach for entrepreneurs & leaders? (“It’s not very catchy, Lord, just saying.”)”

God: Silence, again. (But, with a smile. Thankfully, He likes me 💕)

Kim: Deep sigh.

I won’t bore you with the rest but be assured there were lots of words and months of wrestling.

Closing down Marketing Momentum is cutting off 75% of what I do. Who I am. What I love.

Anticipation Grows
But the longer I talked to God about it the more my anticipation rose up at the thought of having real, substantive, transformational conversations with Christ-centered leaders and entrepreneurs.

Conversations that were deeply spiritual yet intensely practical, centered on letting Jesus lead and permeate the journey they are on.

Are they interested?

Who knows?

But, what else can I do but obey?

Here’s the Plan:
1. I’m cutting the bowlines.

I’m discontinuing Marketing Momentum, the most helpful and profitable program I’ve ever offered during a time when people need it most to do what I think they need even more.

2. I’m setting sail on uncharted seas.

Through groups, individual coaching, and a Soul Flourishing Community, I’ll be offering overwhelmed entrepreneurs and ministry leaders something they need even more than marketing – a time, space, and place to care for their own souls so thatthey can serve others from a full cup.

3. I’m inching forward with the light I have.

I have no idea what the “final picture” of these changes will look like. God is just showing me enough light for the next step along the way.

But I’m excited for the adventure ahead.

If you’ve gotten to this point in the letter, thank you for your patience and also for all the months or years of journeying together. I appreciate you!
