Success Requires Focus – Marketing Game ~ Day 9

by | 66 comments

Welcome to Day 9 of the 5-Minute Marketing Game.

I live in Central Florida where the sun shines 99% of the time. On almost any day, I can take a magazine out on my deck and read in the light of the sun. It’s warm, pleasant, and enjoyable. But truthfully, it’s nothing to write home about.

But suppose for a minute that I went out on my deck under the hot, Florida sun with a magazine and a magnifying glass in my hand.

Success Requires Focus

Now imagine that after I sat down and placed my floppy hat on my head, I took that magnifying glass and held it so that all the sun’s glorious rays converged on one tiny spot on my magazine page.

That magazine would literally catch on fire. That would be something to write home about.

That’s the power of focus.

And that’s what you want to have happen in your coaching business. You want your marketing to set your business on fire.

What can you do to keep yourself laser-focused on your growing your business?

Don’t forget to post your daily marketing activity in the comment section below.

I was asked last night if I would lead a workshop at our regional congregational resource event which precedes our regional church body’s annual meeting. Hundreds of people are in attendance and have the option of attending one of seven workshops every hour. I have led workshops there on other topics but didn’t think it appropriate to ask to speak on Clergy Coaching since it is my for-profit business. But they went ahead and ASKED ME if I would do it so I wrote up a workshop description so they can put it in their booklet/brochure for the event and it will also be on their website so a great way to lift up this ministry!

That’s huge! Congratulations. That will be a great opportunity for you!

Well, I don’t have that magic magnifying glass, as nice as that would be! Working at the time of day that I am the most focused on things that require focus help me.

    • Kim Avery

I agree. I am most focused in the early morning and it all goes downhill from there :).

Thanks for the picture of focus. Today I checked to see if I have google analytics and looked at my website the numbers. I haven’t done that in a long time!

    • Kim Avery

That’s great, Laurie. It’s hard to know what’s working and what isn’t if we don’t keep up with the numbers.

Today I commented on a blog of an inspirational author/speaker in my niche and my city.

Good for you. I’ll bet you were a real blessing in her life.

Today I sent out an 8 question survey (thank you Survey Monkey) to my 400+ readers. Details to follow.

    • Kim Avery

Wow – Carolyn. And if only 10 people respond, you’ll still have 10 times as much information as you do now. That’s the way to do it.

I have spent 5 minutes posting my Take Heart Transitions to my Pinterest board. I have also been reading a free ebook from Jeff Goins on blogs and guest posting to grow your following.

    • Kim Avery

Hi Rayna, I’m curious. I don’t use Pinterest much. Have you found it helpful?

      • Rayna

I am just starting to post my content to there. I have found a few repins are trickling in here and there. I saw where they are going to start with paid ads and was thinking of seeing how it goes. They only charge if you get a click through to your website. Still exploring but any traffic to my sight might increase my email list which is goose who will someday lay the golden egg, right? ;D

        • Kim Avery

Absolutely. Good for you for experimenting with it. That’s how we learn what works.

Today I took a few minutes from putting the finishing touches on Saturday’s workshop agenda, and corresponded via email with a first-time guest contributor regarding her post for the collaborative blog of four women (Australia, Canada, two in U.S.), of which I am one. ‘Variety is the spice of life’ describes my current days 🙂

    • Kim Avery

Good for you. That’s sounds like a great way to reach and to encourage someone else.

Ah yes…focus…I find it works for a while and then it dissipates and I am on to the next shiny thing! Recently, I have started a task list on my google calendar. Not a new thing to do…but it seems to be working to keep me on task!
Today, I sent a chapter submission to someone to read before I sent it in! Excited to be a part of a compilation of others’ stories! I am also continuing my page interaction! Enjoy talking with others!

    • Kim Avery

I understand about the focus, Cindy. I’m continually having to ‘go back to the basics’ in terms of keeping myself on track.

Congratulations on the chapter submission. It sounds great.

No magnifying glass but for laser focus I find consistency and intentionally help me to be more focused: making sure I schedule it in, same time each day if possible, away from distractions, time of day when my mind is most clear.

I have been asked to present at an online telesummit on Journaling late in February. So today I worked on my bio and the title of my presentation.

    • Kim Avery

Kudos on the telesummit on journaling. That sounds like a great opportunity.

I really want to connect with more women afflicted with auto-immune disorders, so I requested a few days ago to join the Auto Immune Support Group and was accepted in today. I spent some time reading all the posts to learn what these women are struggling with. Very informative from a research perspective, but also heartbreaking to see the extent to which women struggle with this life-changing disorder.

    • Kim Avery

Wow – it sounds like a real confirmation that you are in the right niche and that they would really benefit from your help. I’m so glad you got in the group.

I make sure I work on longer projects during the times my children are in school so I can maintain my focus and make progress on them. I also fill out my weekly success planner each week which helps me prioritize and not get distracted. Today I completed writing up a presentation, began to reword some of the content on my website and spoke with some one who said they’d be happy to share my name with people they know because of a relationship I have with them in my part-time position.

    • Kim Avery

You go, Kerry. You are getting so much done. I’m so impressed.

Considering a new niche. As I looked through my LI connections I realize I have four clients in that niche already crafting a ‘reach out’ mail to them to ask for help penetrating the key association for that industry. Also added 4 new LI connections and 2 new FB friends.

This reaching out stuff really works. One of the ladies I asked to connect said she reads my posts and my forum comments and has been thinking of asking for help on growing her business. We are having our get acquainted call next week!

    • Kim Avery

Hi Pat – Interesting about your four clients from the same niche. That sounds like it has real potential. And, I’m very glad your reaching out is working. Kudos!

I’ve been reconnecting with people I knew ages ago at school through facebook. I had them on my personal fb account, but now that I’ve set up one specifically for coaching, they’re finding out more about it. A couple have asked me to send them my Christmas newsletter which I mentioned having sent to people whose emails I have, and one said she is definitely going to hang on to the 50% off the first month’s coaching coupon I had attached, as she may want coaching in the future. I’ve had several people say this to me since the Christmas newsletter which is very encouraging.
I also posted some helpful wellness/health info on my wellness page.

    • Kim Avery

That is very encouraging, Monique. I’m so glad that people are becoming more aware of how you could serve them.
