Discover the Secret of Successful Entrepreneurs

by | 38 comments

My legal pad list of things to do today just spilled over onto a third page, and that doesn’t even include the clients I will coach or the classes I am scheduled to teach.

Deep sigh.

There’s no way I’ll get it all done.  In fact, most of it will go UNdone.

In light of that difficult reality, the critical question is which tasks are worth my full attention and which ones should I leave for another day?

I could start at the top of the list and work my way down. Or I could tackle the easiest ones first so I can have the satisfaction of shortening the list. Or maybe I’ll just get another cup of coffee and bury my head in denial.

Which would you do?

Not surprisingly, successful entrepreneurs choose none of the above. They have a different way of evaluating their priorities, a better way.

I hope you will take two minutes out of your busy day to remind yourself of an important time management secret that will help you for the rest of your business life.

I’m keeping at it every day, tweeting, posting on facebook, experimenting with promoted posts etc. It’s hard to measure the results, as I’m not coaching at the moment… have a dissertation to hand in next Thursday, and a half marathon to run next Sunday, which having been keeping me fairly busy. The one metric I have is facebook page reach stats. Total weekly reach is up to 7093 for the week to 20 April, from 1616 for the week to 6 April. Result! Now to turn some of those into paying clients!

I had a very productive time meeting in person with Kim Avery with some marketing projects. Today, I am editing through the videos, posting on social media and follow up.

Very helpful Kim. Today I have taken time to look at what my most profitable marketing strategies have been so that I can spend more time on these instead of the low yielding ones. I have continued to post on Facebook, take every opportunity to tell people what I do etc. I have not seen measurable results yet but I am trusting God for some great results in the not too distant future!

Although my numbers are still too low to really judge, clearly my active marketing efforts are my best sources, so, referrals from networking, and inquiries from the class where I help to teach and lead a small group. My eNews has also gotten responses over time. Although Facebook and LinkedIn haven’t yielded clients for me, I still sense that they have kept connections “warm.” I sporadically get “likes” and “comments”, and am finding that when I responding with appreciation and/or inquiry, it’s helped continue/further the relationship.

That two-minute post packs a punch. I am deep in thought about the 80/20 rule. My activity for today includes compiling people’s input/opinions regarding my new website logo design and simply thinking through some excellent coaching advice I received yesterday in a “business” conversation.

thanks, Kim. So if most of my clients so far come from my participation with them in organizations I enjoy anyway, that means I can do the fun part more. I love that.

I have been amazed at how far I have gotten over these 11 days by doing a little every day (instead of being overwhelmed by the entirety of what I needed to do). My small job today was getting a new cell phone dedicated to my business which means I can have a message on there for my business. This sets into motion the ability now for me to finish my paperwork with the new number and to be able to order business cards. Slow and steady wins the race… Thanks Kim!

Love the concept. Makes me want to look over my to-do-lists and see what really works and what just has me unnecessarily working. Thanks!

I am spending my time in the most valuable way I know this morning. I had a mini retreat with my Lord. Spent time in repentance and confession of the things I allow to dominate my life and distract me from His purpose. Things that seem desirable and even pleasurable but are not a part of His plan for me. A cleansing time to refocus and center my will in His. A time to remember what He has called me to and advance in His strength and not my own. I can do nothing apart from Him and in Him I can do all things. This was good for me to remember this morning.

Good question: What 20% of my time is contributing to the 80% of my income? I really need to prayerfully seek that answer! Thanks, Kim.

My new thing I’ve done to help my business is: I hired a friend to help me clean on Saturday afternoons. Since I work best as part of a team, this worked great on Saturday! AND we can get projects done that I’ve put off doing. This is important because those Undone projects have become a drain on my energy. This is a big step for me, but it feels RIGHT! YAY!

Day 11: Today’s task was listening to a podcast that is helping me clarify the pieces and parts of my marketing plan which was scheduled as today’s order of business, and maybe tomorrow’s, too. Kim, you always give us something significant to chew on and 80/20 is a big bite!

Thanks for sharing your video with two such key questions: What 20% of your efforts are the major contributors to your success? What 20% of sources are causing your problems? This is the type of examination I need to do every 3 months to keep my new coaching business on-track, so I wrote it in my organizer for July 22nd. I sent out my Life Coaching FAQ to 2 more people I talked to on FB last week. And updated my Tracking Sheet.

Certainly food for thought and something I’ll ponder over the next few days as I do a bit of driving. Today I had lunch with a friend I hadn’t seen in quite some time who is very interested in coaching. She has already been on my new website and has recommended me to friends of hers! I also spoke with another interested individual at my ladies’ luncheon this weekend.

Connections are definitely happening and I am excited to keep this going into May as I enjoy some extra time to devote to marketing in its various forms. I am looking forward to increasing the momentum and getting my first newsletter out to all those who signed up for it on May 1st.

Oh, Yes. The challenge as I get going is to discover who & what provides the 20%.
I have experienced when starting a new ‘business’ you take and do whatever you can to get the ball rolling and then begin to be more selective as you progress to develop a stronger 20% activity group. So I wonder how that applies to coaching?

Day 11: An amazing day today of balance of caring for some personal matters and building my business! I received a call from a potential client who was referred to me several months ago. The individual finally decided to actually engage a career coach. We had an awesome conversation by phone about her objectives and how her expectations align with the services I provide. Practicing ‘active listening’ continues to payoff in conversations with prospective clients. The decision to ‘hire me’ is not yet final but the connection with this client makes me feel pretty optimistic this engagement will ‘close’ in a few days.
