Frequently Asked Questions
What is Spiritual Direction?
Contrary to the way it sounds, a spiritual director does not direct you. In fact, the real Spiritual Director of your session is the Holy Spirit.
Spiritual direction focuses on your relationship and intimacy with God, so that God, who is the most important part of your life, can permeate all of your life.
With compassion and curiosity, a spiritual director will help you notice, name, and explore God’s movement, love, and guidance.
What is the difference between coaching and spiritual direction?
While both coaching and spiritual direction aim to support and guide you, the key difference lies in their focus and approach. Coaching is primarily concerned with achieving specific personal or professional goals and employing proven processes to bring about change and development. It is action-oriented, with an emphasis on enhancing performance, productivity, or satisfaction in various areas of life.
On the other hand, spiritual direction centers on your spiritual journey, helping you deepen your relationship with God, explore spiritual practices, and discern your spiritual calling or direction. It is reflective and exploratory, with a greater emphasis on listening to and discerning the movements of God in your life.
What are some questions people might bring to spiritual direction?
Questions that might bring someone to spiritual direction include:
- How do I deepen my relationship with God?
- How can I be more aware of God in my everyday life?
- How can I find peace amidst spiritual struggles?
- Where is God in the difficulties I’m facing?
- My spiritual life seems dry. How can I respond?
- Where is God inviting me to grow? To go? To let go?
- How can I better cooperate with Him?
.
Is it important that I understand the difference between coaching and spiritual direction?
No, topics that are explored in coaching and spiritual direction often overlap, and that’s fine. One of the reasons I pursued training and certification in both fields is to be equipped to serve you effectively, whether through coaching or spiritual direction, depending on your preference and the Lord’s guidance. I’m happy to use whatever skills I have to help you on your journey.
Is there any long-term commitment?
Because all change takes time, it’s helpful to acknowledge that by committing to at least one session a month for six months. Of course, if, for any reason, coaching or spiritual direction is no longer serving you, you can cancel at that time.
What do you believe? [Statement of Faith]
- We affirm the existence of one God, as declared in Deuteronomy 6:4, Isaiah 42:8, and James 2:19, who reveals Himself in three distinct persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit, in accordance with Matthew 28:19 and 2 Corinthians 13:14.
- We believe in the divine nature of Jesus Christ, His miraculous virgin birth, sinless humanity, His sacrificial death on our behalf, the atonement through His precious blood, His bodily resurrection, and His ascension into heaven.
- We hold the entire Bible as God’s infallible, timeless revelation to humanity, serving as our ultimate source of truth and guidance.
- Our faith is firmly grounded in the doctrine of salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone.
- We acknowledge the one true Church, the body of Christ, which includes all believers in Him.
- We anticipate the resurrection of the body, with eternal glory awaiting believers in the new heaven and new earth, as foretold in Isaiah 65:17, 66:22, 2 Peter 3:13, and Revelation 21:1. Conversely, we believe in the reality of everlasting punishment for those who reject faith in Christ.
- We emphasize the importance of obeying our Lord’s command to share the message of Christ with people of all nations and guide them in becoming more Christ-like.
- We eagerly await the personal return of Christ to establish His Kingdom on earth.
- We affirm the indwelling and empowering work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers, serving as a seal and a pledge of our inheritance in Christ Jesus.
- We uphold the biblical view of God’s creation of man and woman and recognize marriage as a sacred union between a man and a woman.
